Having been involved in more than 150 projects in H2020, CIP, LIFE+, FP7, JTI as coordinator and partner, LEITAT is a renowned player in European projects. More than 54 projects are currently under execution under the H2020 programme. The four principal business units of Applied Chemistry & Materials, Energy + Engineering, Circular Economy and Health & Biomedicine cover a broad field of sectors, technologies and applications and are supported by state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities.
The Energy Storage division, part of the Energy + Engineering Business Unit, has a solid track record of R&D activities on existing and future energy storage solutions for Transport, Stationary and Wearable applications. These include Li-ion, Li-S, organic flow batteries, Metal-Air and supercapacitor. The Energy Storage group is the current coordinator of the ALION project (H2020) aiming to develop the aluminium battery technology. The division specializes in electrochemistry, development of new electrolytes and synthesis of materials for battery cell components, testing and integration up to module level.
Albufera Energy Storage, S.L. (AES) is a private SME established in March 2013, formed by a team with large experience in technologies within the energy storage field, including: electrochemistry, materials for the development of batteries, energy storage applications and business and R&D projects (both at national and European level).
Albufera Energy Storage takes, as its starting point, the future development of the energy needs and Smart Grids, according to the strategy set by the EU confirmed for the next 40 years:
- The integration of renewable generation sources in the transmission and distribution grids of electricity.
- The distributed generation of electricity, that is to say, starting from multiple sources delocalized in the European energy map.
- Active Power Demand where the user will have generation resources available, in addition to the consumption, and sufficient information for its management.
- Clean transport on our environment with more efficient vehicles (hybrid and electric).
Advising, Consulting and Engineering.
With the idea to fill a gap in the market of electrical efficiency, Albufera Energy Storage has developed a proprietary method based on an electrochemical system, innovative in energy storage sector, whose advantage is the ability to be adapted to the specific needs of each customer, by designing and supplying energy storage systems based on commercially available battery technologies and hybrid configurations: Lead-acid, Nickel-Cadmium, Lithium-ion, Primary cells and ultracapacitors.
Training and dissemination.
From the beginning, Albufera Energy Storage is committed with the highest professional training in energy storage systems. For over 5 years it has organized the so-called “Universidad de la Batería”, a specialized course of Energy Storage Systems based on electro-chemistry. In 2018 we created the “Instituto de Almacenamiento Energético Albufera” (Albufera Energy Storage Institute) with the mission of disseminating all the advances regarding energy storage, at theoretical and practical level, to all the Spanish-speaking countries all around the globe. With a team of experts and highly training staff we carry out seminars, specialized courses and training in-company. Additionally, AES annually organizes the International Metal- advanced batteries International Congress (MABIC), which brings together researcher and experts in the field of advanced batteries. Thus, knowledge networks and synergies are established with more relevant worldwide research groups working on this area.
Albufera Energy Storage is very active on the innovation tasks, participating in 2 European projects in the framework of Horizon 2020 in different sectors (new materials, energy applications and supporting ICT actions), one of them as project leader (FET-Open). We are also leaders of three national projects in the field of new materials and technologies for the energy storage funded by Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and Ministry of Defense.
Created in 1978 on the basis of the Belgian subsidiary of the FAIREY company, SONACA is an aerospace company located in Gosselies, in the south of Belgium. SONACA is today the parent company of a group of entities located in Brazil, Canada, China, Germany & Romania. SONACA group employs more than 2500 people around the world. SONACA´s core business is the development, manufacturing and assembly of aerospace wing and fuselage structures and their associated subsystems.

The main business lines of SONACA are leading edge structures, fuselage panels and assemblies, wing panels and assemblies for civil transportation aircrafts. Being a risk sharing partner of AIRBUS, EMBRAER, DASSAULT Aviation, BOMBARDIER, PILATUS and other aircraft manufacturers, SONACA is managing turnkey aerospace and defence programs from design to final certification, and for that purpose can count on design, development and industrialization offices accounting several hundreds of engineers, technologists and researchers, used to work in the framework of international programs.
As a partner of AIRBUS through the BELAIRBUS company, SONACA group develops, manufactures, assembles and tests the wing leading edge slats and associated de-icing system for the whole AIRBUS A320, A340, A350 families and the A380 wide body aircraft. In addition to the wing slats, SONACA is also in charge of developments, manufacturing and assembling the A380 nose upper shell and design and development of the engine cowlings and main landing gear doors of the A400M.
Currently, SONACA is designing and developing:
- Moveable wing slat leading edges and flap trailing edges of Embraer 175 / 190 / 195 E2 regional jet aircrafts.
SONACA is also actively involved in space applications and has participated in several ESA programs (ARD, X-38, FESTIP, GSTP), as well as the SPOT5 earth observation satellite, with the development and manufacturing of the equipment platform for ASTRIUM. Latest developments include the complete bus for the PLEIADES satellite, the COROT telescope platform, the AEOLUS / ALADIN optical bench and FP7 R&D project PEASSS.
To prepare the future and to reinforce its technical expertise, SONACA is currently conducting several major national R&D projects in the field of advanced design and manufacturing tools for aerospace structures and systems as (but not limited) bird impact prediction tools, anti-icing system testing and structures made of composite materials or advanced metallic alloys.

Leading edges and wing components are among the most common products of SONACA’s brochure, including a strong Technical Customer support to clients with needs regarding maintenance and repairs. SONACA staff is trained in replacing components and fixing new ones to the damaged aircrafts, which is very useful for this actual project. The possibilities for getting parts coated with the innovative products developed in this project are many, since SONACA already possesses the know-how, instruments and human resources to fix most of the flap and leading edge models.
Besides, this company commercializes a small aircraft, the SONACA200, having one of them available for tests at Gosselies, which optimizes the associated costs and effort needed to carry the short duration flight test campaign. SONACA assembles the aircraft and has at its disposal one specimen where a leading edge can be replaced easily. In addition, the company is highly familiarized with permits paper work in order to try new products in flight.
